We’ve been posting a lot of recent anniversaries lately (check them out if you haven’t already!) so we decided to take a trip back to 2011 and recount our 3rd anniversary together. We got married pretty young so we were still developing our gift giving skills. The traditional and modern 3rd anniversary gift categories are Leather and Crystal/Glass, although we didn’t learn about Glass being a secondary option until after this anniversary so we missed out on it at the time. But let’s get started with our Leather and Crystal gifts!
Back in 2011, there weren’t a ton of leather gift options on the internet. Etsy was still fairly new and I hadn’t been able to find something that Jay would really like. But he had recently started a watch collection so I figured the leather strap was sufficient for this anniversary gift! Since he worked in a NYC office then, he had bought himself a couple nice silver watches to match his business wardrobe. They were nice of course, but were often too formal-looking so he couldn’t really wear them outside of work when he was dressing more casual. I came across a really nice Burberry watch with a big silver face and black leather strap. It looked great with a suit, but also fit perfectly with more casual clothing. All these years later, it’s still a staple in his regular rotation!
Our anniversary is two days after Christmas so the holidays have usually found their way into our gift giving tendencies. In perfect timing, Swarovski was celebrating their 20th year of their Annual Edition Christmas Ornament in 2011. Since crystal was a little difficult to find for Jay I figured this would be the perfect anniversary gift! It’s a beautiful crystal star that sparkles and reflects the lights around the tree. It’s always front and center on our tree and is a great reminder of our history together.
Annie had a handful of handbags (LOL) at the time so I figured she didn’t need to add another one to her collection. I later learned that she would never turn down another bag! But in any case, I opted for the other typical leather gift that I thought would be more practical for our winter anniversary. I went to our local mall (kids, ask your parents) and bought a nice pair of black leather gloves. Looking back at it now, I probably could’ve been a little more creative with this anniversary gift. But she loved the gloves and they got a lot of use during our cold winters in the northeast! Thankfully leather returned for our 9th anniversary so I had another opportunity to up my leather gift giving game.
As I mentioned in our 7th anniversary blog post, Annie has extensive Irish heritage. Luckily for us, her grandma helped start our Waterford crystal collection by gifting us a vase and lamp for our wedding. They featured prominently in our dining room for the prior three years and always meant so much to Annie. So building on that, I decided to add to our collection by giving Annie a set of Waterford candlesticks. The way light bounces off the crystal is magnificent and it makes our dining room look so amazing and fancy! It was a great addition to our house and Annie really appreciates the sentimental value in the gift.
