Iron is one of two traditional 6th anniversary gifts. Blacksmiths, one of the oldest professions in the world dating back thousands of years, would use extreme heat and pressure to forge molten iron into tools, weapons and armor. Under these extreme conditions the strongest of bonds are created while molding an end product into something useful that will last a lifetime. Not all too dissimilar from how relationships are formed and developed over time with pressure and passion while going through good times and bad. Similar to prior gifts like leather and wood, iron represents the strength and durability of a marriage that has been forged over years of shared experiences, communication and love.
CANDY
The other traditional 6th anniversary gift is Candy. They say that calories on vacation don’t count. So why should anniversaries be any different?! Give each other something sweet and sugary to remind yourselves of your younger days that weren’t entirely consumed with things like work, chores, and endless kids activities. Six years in is far too early to start feeling old, so pretend to be a kid again and keep that youthful spirit and fire going in other parts of your relationship to keep feeling young years into the future. When’s the last time you had a cavity anyway?!

Anniversary gifts don’t always have to be romantic or meaningful. Of course, it’s always nice when they are. But sometimes practicality and functionality are exactly what’s needed in a busy household. We had been trying some new recipes and expanding beyond the typical dinners, but had a big hole in our kitchen arsenal. And that’s where this 10” cast iron skillet came in. It allowed us to go beyond the standard meals and cook some delicious dishes together that we still enjoy to this day.
Candy
When the anniversary category calls for candy, you buy your partner candy. It’s as simple as that! And I bought a lot of candy. To be fair, it’s hard to walk into a Dylan’s Candy Bar and not buy a lot of candy! I filled up a massive bag with a variety of hard and chewy candies that I knew Annie would enjoy and finished off the sweet gift with a few 3 lb. chocolate bars. It was fun to feel like a kid again, and get the biggest sugar high!

Iron
We didn’t have much of a home gym at the time (still don’t!) but Jay and I liked to do small workouts around the house whenever we could. With young kids and a commute to the city, he didn’t have much time to make it out to the gym on a regular basis. So I picked up some simple 12 and 15 lb dumbbells so he can pump some iron right at home. No more excuses, Jay! We later listed those dumbbells on our local Facebook swap page, and upgraded to the BowFlex 552s for a larger weight range!
Candy
As Jay said, you must follow whatever the anniversary gift category says! I bought several (dozens?) of Jay’s favorite candy bars and bags to satisfy this sweet anniversary gift. Of course, our late December anniversary paired with this gift did not help us with our New Years’ Resolutions. Still working on that part… but the candy lasted a long time and it was a fun way to share our favorite candies together!
